Organizers of Miss Diva Awardshave explained why they arehonouring embattled ex-beautyqueen, Chidinma Okeke, despite heralleged involvement in a series ofsex tapes which have been buzzingthe internet for weeks now.“Chidinma didn’t have to meet anycriteria to receive this award. “We are aware of the controversythat will come with it. But we hopethat in due time, every well-meaningand reasonable individual will seethe reasons behind the award.”
Trouble started for Ms. Okeke, theformer Miss Anambra 2015 whohails from Orumba North inAnambra State, when earlier inOctober, sex videos were leaked onthe internet appearing to show herin a racy scene with a fellow modelidentified as Adaobi Nzekwe whoalso doubles as her personalassistant. At first, she vehemently deniedbeing involved in the video,claiming her face was superimposed.
However, she slipped into newdepths when a second video wasreleased showing the ex-beauty andher P.A. in a more sordid scene,inserting a full cucumber fruit intotheir private parts.
Vanguard newspaper reportedpenultimate weekend that a thirdone-hour long sex tape featuring thedisgraced former beauty queen andthat is much more graphic than thefirst two snippets was about to hitthe internet. The report also cited asource who said the tapes had beenreleased in retribution for Ms. Okekenot holding up her end of a dealwith an unnamed “chief”.
This person reportedly invested money on thepageant organisers to ensure that Miss. Okekewould win and then also spent money for hermakeup and wardrobe. The deal also stipulatedthat the unnamed donor would receive theproceeds she made from her reign as MissAnambra, but Ms. Okeke allegedly reneged on thedeal.
Mr. Chijioke, also said the award’s organiserswere supporting the ex-beauty queen to curb theexploitation of young girls by the “high andmighty” in the modelling industry, who allegedlyuse blackmail to tarnish the image and dreams ofyoung girls and bring the modelling industry as awhole into disrepute.“We chose to stand with Chidinma right till thevery end. We’ll give her every support we haveat our disposal; morally, psychologically, legally.
She is an icon and through her we can reach outto thousands of girls who have or are on theverge of being sexually exploited. It is a civilizedworld, we shouldn’t be so judgmental,” he said.Meanwhile, the decision to honour Chidinma hasdrawn both criticism and applause on the socialmedia.
While some found it disgusting to honour her,others were of the view that she should be shownconcern whether she committed the act or not soas to avoid a case of her being forced to suicide.
“I never wanted to talk about this issue on mywall but this is getting stupid by the day. How canyou give an award to a lesbian instead offollowing the law which states how many yearsimprisonment she should face,” Embo Ems, aFacebook user wrote.
Other supporters pledged their support on allsocial media networks with the hashtag#istandwithChidimma .
However, the implications of this scandal forChidinma are growing direr. After losing hertitle, the former Miss Anambra was alsocondemned by Anambra Broadcasting Service(ABS), the organizers of the pageant.
In a recent development, The NationalCoordinator of the Association for UniversalMoral Education Nigeria, Therese Nwodo,blamed failed parenting for the alleged sexscandal.
The Catholic sister called on the Nigerian publicnot to traumatize the beauty queen the more bydramatizing her situation but to offer herpsychological and spiritual succor to overcomethe crisis.
“The lesbianism story about the beauty queen isunfortunate; it is symptomatic of what is goingon in the society now. Our values have gonedown; parents are no longer available to teachtheir children what is socially acceptable”, shetold News Agency of Nigeria.
In a lengthy post on Facebook, the embattled ex-beauty queen said she feared she would be shotat a press conference she scheduled to talk aboutthe scandal.
